Hotel Los Cerros is set amidst the breathtaking Patagonian landscape, where the magic of the colours of glaciers, lagoons, lakes and mountains combine with the appealing presence of Torre and Fitz Roy mountains.
The town of El Chaltén, -founded in the reserve area of the Viedma Zone mainly for geopolitical reasons-, is situated in Lago Argentino County, on the northern margin of Viedma Lake, in the confluence of De las Vueltas and Fitz Roy rivers, inside Los Glaciares National Park. About a hundred hectares of this reserve were specifically protected, leaving the town in the middle of the area. Its natural boundaries are the Fitz Roy river to the south and the De las Vueltas river to the east.
The name `el chaltén´ comes from the former inhabitants of the town, the `Tehuelches´, who referred to the famous Fitz Roy mountain as `blue mountain´ or `smoking mountain´, because its imposing and unforgettable outline is almost always covered by clouds, which they naively confused with smoke, thus giving the mountain its indian name: El Chaltén.
Created in 1937 and declared Part of the World´s Natural Heritage in 1981 by the UNESCO, the Los Glaciares National Park comprises an area of 700,000 hectares of mountainous landscape, lakes and forests, including a vast portion of the Andean Mountains, -practically wholly snow-covered to the west-, and the arid Patagonian steppe to the east. As a result of the thawing of this huge ice system, two large lakes were formed: Argentino and Viedma Lakes, which pour their waters into the Atlantic Ocean, traversing all the Province of Santa Cruz in the form of a serpent-like river bearing the same name. The park nests 356 glaciers, 13 of which are the most famous ones.
The Los Glaciares National Park counts with an inmense and interesting flora and fauna. The Andean Patagonian forest will tempt you with the finest photo safaris to enjoy all the beauty this region boasts of. `Huemules´, `pumas´, red foxes, hares, `aguilas moras´ (black-chested Buzzard-eagles), woodpeckers and the majestic Andean condors are all local inhabitants of this priviledged region.
An area of about 80,000 hectares of the national park nest a flora in which outstand the `lenga´, the mazzard tree, the `ñire´, sharing the territory with bushes such as the `notro´ and its particular red flowers, the `aljaba´, the `calafate´and the `sauco del diablo´.
In an inmense territory of almost 800,000 square kilometers, the Patagonian region of Argentina comprises the provinces of Río Negro, Neuquén, Chubut, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego.
The term Patagonia, –derived from `Patagones´-, was first used in the year 1520 by Portuguese sailor Hernando de Magallanes to identify the indians who inhabited this unexplored region. This extensive territory of breathtaking beauty offers a series of natural scenarios which are unique worldwide. Its vast geography comprises the inmense rock masses of the Cordillera de los Andes and its large plateau, covered by the typical steppe vegetation and spotted with lakes, rivers, mountains, local forests and spectacular glaciers of thousands of years of age.
As a result of the thawing of this huge ice system, two large lakes were formed: Argentino and Viedma Lakes, which pour their waters into the Atlantic Ocean, traversing all the Province of Santa Cruz in the form of a serpent-like river bearing the same name.
Los Glaciares National Park is located right in the middle of this superb and unparalleled landscape, southeast of Santa Cruz Province, and is home to marvels like the impressive and breathtaking Fitz Roy Mountain, the Torre rock masses and the Viedma, Upsala and Perito Moreno Glaciers, among others.
Visiting this extreme southern area of Patagonia is to experience the Earth as it was thousands of years ago, about the end of the last glacier era, and to have the feeling that Time had not elapsed since then.
A virgin land, scarcely populated as well as explored, Nature in Patagonia shows itself with all its power and splendor. The weather is unstable, with a substantial temperature difference between day and night.
