.: Agustina de Alba, Best Argentina Sommelier
Last Monday , Agustina de Alba won a sommelier competition held at the
Four Seasons and organized by the Asociación Argentina de Sommeliers. According to the Clarin newspaper, Alba was a surprise winner over the other three finalist, two men and one woman.
Only
20 years old, Alba has been interested in wine and wine tasting since
she was fourteen-years-old and her father took her to Mendoza. After
a trip to the vineyards, she became passionate about the subject and
one of her high school teacher’s recommended she pursue being a
sommelier as a career. Now, she is accepted to the Escuela
Argentina de Sommeliers and will represent Argentina at the
Pan-American competition of 2009. Agustina just finished last season working in Hostería Los Notros.

.: New walkways!
With the aim that tourist could get to enjoy the natural sight of the most famous glacier of the world more comfortably, 870 meters of walkways have been opened to the public, in the area that goes from the first balcony to the lowest point of observation.
With an investment of approximately $41.000.000 the project comprises the renewal of the existing infrastructure, that includes the total dismantling of the walkways which will be replaced by metallic ones. Additionally, it includes the installation of a double walkway from the entrance to the first viewpoint (Mirador 1), wooden benches so that observers can have a rest and a viewpoint with special handrails so as to meet the needs of handicapped persons.
The project also includes the construction of 6 intermediate viewpoints, and even the provision of a lift between viewpoints 1 to 9, for the use of pregnant women, elderly and handicapped people.

A new rupture of the Perito Moreno Glacier announced as imminent.

The rangers of Los glaciares National Park as well as tourist guides working in the area agree that a rupture of the Perito Moreno glacier is imminent.
‘We can officially confirm, states Carlos Corvalán, the National Park’s administrator, that the glacier has created a dam dividing the lake in two and that there is a three-meter difference in water level between the lake’s two arms.’
The latest ruptures, in March 2004 and March 2006, were truly spectacular. This phenomenon takes place when the glacier advances creating an ice dam that seals off the Rico arm, one of Lake Argentino’s branches.
Eduardo Malagnino, a geologist at the University of Buenos Aires, told La Nación newspaper that ‘it is not infrequent for the Rico arm to be blocked by the glacier at this time of the year. In general, closures take place in June or July, as in 1951, or in September, as in 1952, but closures have also been documented in November, as in 1941 and 2005.´
